*Local political subdivisions: county local propositions, cities, school districts, water districts, hospital districts, and any other local government entity that conducts elections. The majority of these elections are conducted on the May uniform election date.

**Filing deadlines:

  1. Generally, the filing deadline is the 62nd day prior to Election Day (70th day prior to election day in November of an even-numbered year); however, the Election Code may provide a different special election filing deadline. See Section 201.054 of the Texas Election Code.
  2. Local political subdivisions, other than cities or school districts, might not have a "first day" to file. Write-in deadlines for general and special elections also vary, but the deadline is usually on the 5th day after the regular filing deadline for the election.

***If no candidate for a four-year term has filed an application for a place on the ballot for a city office, the filing deadline for that office is extended to 5 p.m. of the 57th day before the election.  See Section 143.008 of the Texas Election Code.

Water Districts, Chapters 36 & 49

Special procedures apply to a newly-elected director of a water district governed by Chapters 36 or 49 of the Texas Water Code. A duplicate original of the oath (but not the statement of elected/appointed officer) shall also be filed with the secretary of state within 10 days after its execution and need not be filed before the new director begins to perform the duties of office. (Texas Water Code, Sections 36.055, 49.055). As this is an odd-numbered year, we are aware that most water districts are not conducting a general election.
