AUSTIN, TX – Governor Rick Perry’s appointment of Texas Secretary of State John Steen has been confirmed by the Texas Senate. Secretary Steen was appointed the 108th Texas Secretary of State on November 27, 2012.
“I want to thank the members of the Texas Senate and especially the Senate Nominations Committee for confirming my appointment,” said Secretary Steen. “I will continue to work hard every day to earn the respect, trust and confidence of all Texans in my service to our great state. I believe this is as exciting a period as we have ever experienced in Texas, with all of the promise, potential and possibility before us and I will do all I can as secretary of state to keep the momentum going.”
The Texas Secretary of State has many roles in state government, including chief election officer, chief international protocol officer and Border Commerce Coordinator. The office also maintains the state’s business and public filings and coordinates the colonia initiatives program.
Prior to his appointment, Secretary Steen was an attorney in private practice. He was previously a commissioner with the Department of Public Safety and before that, a commissioner with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission where he also served as chairman. Secretary Steen has been a member of numerous civic and government boards and commissions.
Secretary Steen is a native of San Antonio where he lives when he is not working in Austin. The Secretary and Mrs. Steen have three grown children and two grandchildren.
